BAEPD and Paranova travel back to uk court [Fri 14-Jan-2000]
On Monday 17th January the major pharmaceuticals repackaging case, Paranova, will be heard in the High Court, following the European Court of Justice decision to refer an important element of the case back to the national court. John Barker, chairman of the British Association of European Pharmaceutical Distributors (BAEPD - formerly known as API), expressed his hope that the judgement would reflect the need to reduce patient confusion over medicines.

After 12 years involvement in parallel importing in the United Kingdom, first as a distributor and then as the chairman of the national body, the Association of Pharmaceutical Importers (API), John Barker has had many dealings with pharmaceutical manufacturers. Much of the dialogue has been tense, some has ended up with both parties facing each other in court. A softening of this attitude is now evident. Only last month, Mr Barker sat round the same table as the industry group, the ABPI, it may have been to discuss the Y2K issue, but it nevertheless marked the first ever ABPI/API collaboration.

The Government is currently considering the needs and regulation of electronic commerce. The API sent the following document as its response to the recent consultative document, 'Building Confidence in Electronic Commerce' (URN99/642). The Trade and Industry Committee in its Seventh Report for session 1998/9 (HC187) acknowledges the significance of the API response.
